Focused computer use often cuts blink rate in half. The sting at four o’clock is easy not to notice until the eyes already hurt. EyesRhythm is a blink rate detector built to sit beside the work rather than become another job.
What a blink rate detector actually measures
A blink rate detector uses a camera to notice each blink and measure how often they happen, usually as blinks per minute. That number matters. Office workers in a well-known study blinked about 22 times a minute at rest, 10 while reading a book, and 7 while looking at a screen. The screen took more than the book.
Count alone still misses the hour. Six blinks spread through a minute and six blinks piled into clumps, with a long wait in the middle, produce the same average and two very different surfaces. EyesRhythm folds rate and regularity into the Ocular Rhythm Index, from 0 to 100.
How EyesRhythm detects blinks
- Sit as you usually work. A built-in laptop camera or a USB webcam is enough, as long as it can see your eyes.
- The app reads frames on this computer. Nothing is uploaded. Nothing is kept as a film of your face.
- Each counted blink updates the live cadence. Trace shows the last minutes. Alert can pulse or make a sound if you ask it to.
- Practice is a two-minute coach, so a fuller blink is easier to feel again after a long stretch of looking.
The camera setup guide covers distance, glasses, and the few things that help the detector count cleanly.
Why screens cut blink rate
A blink is a short blackout. When the work on the screen is dense, the brain parks those blackouts or holds them back. You keep seeing. The tear film waits. Incomplete blinks, where the lids never quite meet, leave a strip unwiped. That is why a detector that only nags you to “blink more” is not the whole picture.
The journal piece on why screens cut your blink rate walks through the research, including incomplete blinks and lumpy timing. The piece on jobs that dry the eyes is for the kinds of desk work that hold the lids still.
